Prius hybrid uses a nickel-metal hydride battery pack that can propel the
vehicle solely on electric power for just one mile at 25 mph or less. It is
recharged by the gas engine, which provides the majority of the vehicle's
driving power. By contrast, Prius Plug-in comes equipped with a larger,
higher- capacity lithium-ion battery pack that, under certain conditions,
has the power to operate the vehicle in EV Mode at near-freeway speeds
for a maximum distance of about 10 to15 miles. Once this battery pack is
discharged, Prius Plug-in changes to hybrid mode. This battery pack can
also be charged by plugging the vehicle into a 110v outlet for 3 hours or a
220v outlet for 1.5 hours. In short, Prius Plug-in can use all-electric power
for many short trips or hybrid power for longer trips.
A demonstration fleet of some 600 Prius Plug-ins has been roaming the
roads of the U.S., Japan and Europe since the end of 2009. The production
version will incorporate changes based on user feedback. But
fundamentally, the plug-in technology will be the same.
- How will the Prius Plug-in be Sold?
Production volume for Prius Plug-in will be limited. Toyota will deploy an Online Order System
through which most of the volume will be distributed. The Prius Plug-in will be available for delivery
at Toyota dealerships in just 15 states at launch. In 2013, it will be available in all 50 states.
As of April 22, customers who are intrigued by plug-in technology and are seriously considering
buying one of the first Prius Plug-ins can register online at the Priority Registration site
www.toyota.com/plugin. You can get the most accurate and latest information about the vehicle
and the sales process at this site.
Current Toyota owners who already have a Customer Central account will simply need to update it to
document their interest in the Prius Plug-in. Newcomers will need to create an account and
provide
contact information. Then, beginning fall 2011, if you have established
an account, you
will have a special
Priority Order Window of around 4 to 6 weeks to place an order
for a Prius
Plug-in before the ordering
process will be opened
up to the general public. You will be
able to
select their preferred equipment
and color, and the dealer through which you want to order
your vehicle. Delivery, provided by the local
dealer, will follow in about five to six months
- beginning in spring 2012 for the first customers to place an order.
