You think you have everything mapped out. Road snacks and activities? Check. Emergency kit, scheduled maintenance completion and a tank full of gas? Check. The safety and all-weather reassurance of a family-oriented ride like the Toyota RAV4? Check.
But what many parents overlook--at no fault to them--are the car seats. Car seats are often ignored and for one simple reason: You believe everything is properly installed. Taking a few minutes to double check everything could make a substantial difference in your child’s safety. Here are some things to keep in mind before hitting the road:
- Pinch the car seat strap near your child’s shoulder and tug the car seat from side to side and front and back. If the seat moves or you can pinch a wrinkle of clothing, adjust the car seat accordingly.
- Never add extra layers between your child and car seat.
- If the seat belt buckle is too hot, let it cool before buckling your child in.
- In the event of a crash, make sure all cargo is secure.
- Rented car seats do not come with CARFAX. Because of foggy histories, it is better you do not rent them.
